To change the availability mode of an availability group. Connect to the server instance that hosts the primary replica. Use the ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP statement, as the following example: SQL. ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP *group_name* MODIFY REPLICA ON '*server_name*' WITH ( AVAILABILITY_MODE = ASYNCHRONOUS_COMMIT , FAILOVER_MODE = MANUAL ); Where group_name is the name of the availability group and server_name is the name of the server instance that hosts the replica to be modified.
Once the AG indicates that it's synchronized, then do the failover. This way you won't have data loss. You can then go back to async mode after the failover is completed. See Change the Availability Mode of an Availability Replica (SQL Server) for instructions on how to make the change prior to the failover.
